It makes me very happy to know that the Book of Philemon is in the Bible.
I’m glad that there is an entire book devoted to pursuing the freedom of a first century Roman slave.
I’m glad that Paul tells the former slave owner to regard this man: “no longer as a bondservant but more than a bondservant, as a beloved brother.” (Philemon 1:16 ESV)
I’m glad that an Apostle of Jesus Christ offered to take personal responsibility for any financial loss that might be involved to the owner: “If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account.” (Philemon 1:18 ESV)
I’m glad that Paul expected to be obeyed on this matter: “Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.” (Philemon 1:21 ESV)
I’m glad that he anticipated that making this bold claim would not negatively impact his relationship with this man: “At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that through your prayers I will be graciously given to you.” (Philemon 1:22 ESV)
Christianity, taken seriously, completely undermines the institution of slavery. Everywhere it was adopted, slavery became unacceptable to the general populace.
This is how we change the world friends.
One convert.
One Gospel appeal.
One wrong righted at a time.
Thanks be to God!
