The Hatred of God in the Psalms of David

As you read through the Psalms one of the things you’ll have to deal with is the frequent mention of God’s hatred for wicked people.

The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. (Psalms 5:5–6 ESV)

How does one make sense of such a statement? You can’t simply say “God hates the sin but loves the sinner” because that plainly isn’t what the text says.

The text says that God hates the sinner.

“you hate all evildoers.” (v.5)

“the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.” (v.6)
